Recommended gear
Everything here is gear we actually run at the nursery — no sponsorships, just what works. Some links may become affiliate links; it never changes what we recommend.
SubstrateFluval Stratum
The base of our Heliamphora mix — we blend it roughly 50/50 with pumice. It's a mineral-rich volcanic aquarium substrate that stays airy while holding moisture, and the sun pitchers root through it beautifully.

SubstrateHorticultural pumice
The other half of the Heliamphora mix, and our go-to for opening up any media that holds too much water. Unlike perlite it doesn't float to the surface or crush to dust. We buy ours from General Pumice.

Peat moss + perlite
The classic 1:1 carnivore mix — it's what every Sarracenia and flytrap here grows in. Plain peat with no fertilizer added, cut with coarse perlite for drainage. Check the bag: 'enriched' peat kills carnivores.
WaterRO water system
Carnivorous plants need mineral-free water, and buying distilled gets old fast. A small reverse-osmosis unit fills our stock barrels; if you have a handful of plants, jugs of distilled work fine too.

WaterTDS meter
Reads dissolved solids in seconds — we use it to confirm the RO system is putting out clean water and to dial in fertilizer strength when we feed. If you're not sure whether your water is safe for carnivores, this $15 answer settles it.

Growing1020 trays (no holes)
The tray-watering workhorse. Pots sit in these with an inch or three of water all season — bog conditions without a bog. Get the heavy-duty ones; thin trays crack within a year in the sun.

Growers Choice PFS-series LEDs
Our Heliamphora live under Growers Choice PFS-series LEDs in a grow tent year-round. The common mistake with sun pitchers is buying a light that's too weak, not too strong — they want it bright.

Grow tent
Keeps humidity high and light contained for the highland collection. A basic tent plus a small fan gives you a controlled climate for a few hundred dollars all-in.

GrowingFolding cooler table
The secret to keeping Heliamphora sitting in water indoors: a folding cooler table. The recessed basin holds a couple inches of water like a giant tray — deeper, bigger, and cheaper than anything sold as a plant product.
